I seem to be on a bit of a fantasy kick at the moment, and part of it has led me to look for fantasy games on my phone. Ideally I’d want something like a Fighting Fantasy adventure thing, where you follow a story through, maybe with some puzzles thrown in. But a lot of the games are MMO stuff and I don’t have the time. I was playing the DnD “Warriors of Waterdeep” game, but it got kinda samey and boring after a while.
So, really, I shouldn’t like this game as it’s incredibly basic, as the name suggests. Basically, all you do is click “take a step” until you find a resource, where you press and hold a button, or an enemy, where you click another button. Sounds painfully simple and repetitive, doesn’t it? Well, it is, but therein lies the charm.
There are countless of things to collect on this, and numerous achievements, and I love randomly working towards goals. Taking a certain number of steps? Great. Fighting a set number of one opponent in a day? Brilliant.
My slightly obsessive, completion obsessed brain loves it. The game is fun too in that you get randomly whacked by opponents, can vote on things and the characters and items have quirky names and designs. And every step you take comes with a little “travel text” which is usually a daft joke, fantasy cliche or pop culture reference.
It’s wonderful in it’s simplicity, addictive as hell and a great game for wasting time on a commute or bathroom break. Heartily recommended. 8/10.
Any thoughts? You know what to do. BETEO.
