Top 5 Films 2015

Normally I do a top 10, but this year I missed a bunch of movies I wanted to see and when I made a ten list it felt like I was championing a lot of films I wasn’t that impressed with.

As ever the list is personal and based on enjoyment, so while I feel number 5 is probably more well made and interesting than some placed higher, I enjoyed the others more.

5.  Ex-Machina

An interesting and brooding sci-fi thriller that keeps you guessing and boasts three extremely strong lead performances. Full review here.

4. Star Wars: The Force Awakens

JJ Abrams gets the Star Wars saga back on track, it might retread old ground in places but it made this geek very happy. Manages to respect the originals while also laying the groundwork for the future of the series. Returns warmth and humour to the franchise. Review.

3. Jurassic World

A surprise as a sequel around 20 years later knocks it out of the park. A pure thrill ride, which continues Chris Pratt’s incredible run of form and almost matches the classic. It moves quickly and engages throughout, an almost perfect blockbuster. Review.

2. Big Hero 6

Disney and Marvel meet for a sweet, moving story about superheroes which touches on themes like grief, loss, the dangers of revenge and obsession. It boasts a hilarious script and moments of genuine emotion, and in Baymax boasts one of the most likeable Disney characters ever. Review.

1. Inside Out

An inventive and clever movie which explores emotions and memory in a unique and emotive way. It has funny moments throughout, but it’s the emotional punch that sticks with you, and left me choked up. A wonderful concept flawlessly executed and allows audiences to think about emotions in a new way. A gem. Review.

Any thoughts? You know what to do. BETEO.
